Dr. Truman Raymond (1783-1861)

The Raymond family was of English origin. They emigrated from England and settled in the Eastern United States, as early as 1630.

Dr. Truman Raymond was born in Great Barrington Berkshire, Massachusetts on July 16, 1783.

His parents were Lemuel Raymond (1959-1829), born in Connecticut and Hanna Bucknam Underwood (1759-1806) born in Massachusetts.

Dr. Truman Raymond married Elizabeth Dulmage

At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Dr. Truman Raymond joined the British Forces. He came to Canada as a United Empire Loyalist..During the War of 1812 he was stationed in Gananoque as a surgeon , then, moved to Prescott and then to Niagara in 1824. He was appointed surgeon to the First Lincoln Regiment in 1838. By 1840 his family moved to St Catharines. Here he had a highly respected practice.

In 1856 he lost  his wife and son. At this time, Welland became the county seat, when Lincoln and Welland counties were formed.

Dr. Truman Raymond’s son Lorenzo D. Raymond was appointed clerk of the new county on May 16,1856 and on March 5, 1858 he became the county Crown Attorney. He moved to Welland and Dr. Truman Raymond moved in with his son.

Dr, Truman Raymond died January 25,1861 and is buried in the family plot in Fonthill cemetery.

Dr. Truman Raymond and Elizabeth Dulmage had 5 children.

Elizabeth Ann Raymond was born  March 27,1813 in Leeds. She was a spinster, died in Welland on October 28,1898 and is buried in the Fonthill cemetery

George Heck Raymond was born July 16,1823 in Leeds. He died February 1824 in Leeds.

Erastus Beardsley Raymond born 1829 and died July 4, 1856 at the home of R.A. Clarke in St Catharines.

Lorenzo Dulmage born September 11, 1811 in Prescott. He died January 12, 1892 in St Catharines.

Sophia Raymond married Richard Atkinson Clarke born 1812 in Ireland. They were married September 6, 1845 in St Catharines. Richard was a lumber dealer.

Their children were: Sophia Clarke born 1856, Charles Clarke born 1855, Mary Clarke born 1857 and Elizabeth Clarke born 1858.

Sophia Raymond Clarke died December 3, 1883 in St Catharines.

Dr. Truman Raymond’s son Lorenzo Dulmage Raymond married Mary Jane Cochran born in Northern Ireland. They married on October 30, 1855. They 4 children. Mary Elizabeth Raymond born June 27, 1865. She married Thomas Clark Street Macklem, a divinity student, on July 8,1885. Records show that she separated from him. Mary died May 24, 1955 in Toronto at age 89.

Lornzo’s son Samuel Dulmage Raymond was born August 18,1856 in Welland. He became an accountant for the Imperial Bank.

He married Annie Marian Green Armytage on October 30, 1895 in Fergus. Samuel died January 1, 1928 in Toronto and is buried in Belsyde cemetery.

Lorenzo’s son William Beardsley Raymond was born April 20, 1858, became a lawyer. He married Alexis McDougall Cromar on April 13,1889.

William died November 3, 1945 in Toronto and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto..

Lorenzo’s son Lorenzo Clark Raymond was born October 7, 1859. He became a lawyer and practiced in Welland. He was called Colonel Raymond. He died June 19, 1942 in Welland.
