JENNIE LILLIAN BRENNAN

RETIRED TEACHER MISS J. BRENNAN PASSES AWAY

[The Welland-Port Colborne Evening Tribune, 21 February 1946]

Head of the Latin department at the Welland high and vocational school, where she had been a member of the staff for 37 years, until her retirement three years ago, Miss Jennie Lillian Brennan died early this morning in the Welland County General hospital. She was in her 66th year.

Acknowledged to be one of the most outstanding teachers of Latin in the province, Miss Brennan had taught several generations of Welland high school students and was singularly beloved by graduates of the school, large numbers of whom often returned in later years to visit her. She had been in failing health for some time, and was forced to resign from the staff in September 1943, on her physician’s advice.

Miss Brennan had spent all her life in the Welland district and had devoted herself to teaching. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Brennan, she was at one time a pupil at Welland high school herself. She attended normal school upon her graduation, and taught public school for four years, before receiving her B.A. at Queen’s University.

In 1906, she joined the teaching staff at the high school and taught art for a number of years, later transferring to Latin, and becoming head of the Latin department. She was commended highly for her outstanding and faithful service by members of the board of education upon her retirement.

A member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian church, Miss Brennan had also been a past worthy matron of Welland chapter, number 47, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two brothers, Edward of Leamington and Louis of Welland; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Brennan of Smith’s Falls and Nixon Brennan of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock from the Sutherland-Thorpe funeral home, 152 Hellems avenue, to Fonthill cemetery for interment.
