THREE BROTHERS DIE IN MOST TRAGIC MANNER
Frederick, Gottleib and Augustus Schleffel All Die In Sensational Way
[The Welland Tribune and Telegraph, 7 June 1921]
A very strange coincidence is noted in connection with the death of Augustus Schleffel, which occurred on Friday morning at one.a.m., due to injuries received when struck by a street car, driven by Motorman Lounsberry, at eleven fifteen on Thursday morning.
Two brothers of the deceased man passed away in an equally sensational manner, within a period of ten years, and all within a radius of half a mile, of the other. The death of the three Schleffel’s wipes out the family, as there were only the three brothers.
Frank Schleffel, of Welland, was the first of the three men to meet death in a most tragic manner. He disappeared on January 21st, 1911. His body was taken from the canal at the Aqueduct on Saturday, May 20th, 1911. He left home at ten o’clock on the morning of his disappearance. A friend claimed to have seen him on the ice at Airline on the same day. That was all that was known about his mysterious disappearance until he was taken from the canal five months later.
The second tragedy occurred on South Main street on Friday, January 14th, of the present year. Gotteib Schleffel, of Port Colborne, while on a visit to this city was knocked down by an automobile between Fifth and Sixth streets, while attempting to cross the street at that point. He lived but one hour.
The strange resemblance of the two cases on South Main street, will be noted by the following:-
Both men were residents of out of town, and were just visiting the city.
Both men walked with the assistance of crutches.
Both accidents occurred on South Main street within a short distance of each other.
Both vehicles which caused the accidents were coming from the Michigan Central Depot.
The deaths of both Gottlsib Schleffel and Augustus Schleffel occurred in the Welland County Hospital.
