ALEXANDER RUSSELL HURST

The death occurred this morning at his home, 10 Garner avenue of Alexander Russell Hurst in his 67th year following an illness of 11 years duration. Born in Lyon’s Creek, he was formerly a C.N.R. engineer in Northwestern Ontario., and in Saskatchewan, and he came to Welland eight years ago. Deceased was a member of Central United church, and had been a member of Ionic Masonic Lodge, Rainy River, for 38 years.

Mr. Hurst is survived by his widow Mrs. Gertrude Miller Hurst, two daughters, Mrs. Muriel Sheils, and Mrs. Maxine Fox; two brothers, Emmanuel and Aden Hurst in Hamilton, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Heidenreich of Hamburg, New York, as well as a grandchild, Beverley Fox, Welland.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. from the H. L. Cudney funeral chapel, 241 West main street to Woodlawn cemetery.

Alexander Russell Hurst (2) was born at Lyons’s Creek on 16 June 1878. He was a C.N.R. Engineer and moved to Rainy River, Ontario ca 1910 where he married Gertrude May Miller, 15 November 1911. They had two children, Muriel Gertrude and Maxine Oline. Around 1917 the family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where they lived at 1408 Lorne Avenue. About 1940, they moved to Welland: address 18 Garner Avenue then 10 Garner Avenue. They were members of Central United Church. Alex had been a member of Ionic Masonic Lodge, Rainy River for 38 years. He died 4 November 1948 after a long illness (Parkinson’s disease). The funeral took place at the H.L. Cudney chapel with Rev. Fred R. Hendershot officiating. Pall bearers were Reeve Ellis Morningstar, Russell Morningstar, James Jackson, Henry Booth, Gordon Smith and Ben Barrick. A memorial service was held under the auspices of Cope-Stone Masonic Lodge with Norman H. Korell in charge, assisted by Wor. Bro. H. Pickering, Wor. Bro. G.S. Jarvis, Very Wor. Bro. H.L. Headington and a representative of Merritt Masonic Lodge, Wor. Bro. G.K. Brown. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Plot 2126, Section H, Range 6, Lot 36.
