SALEM [Welland Tribune October 2, 1943]

Salem, Oct 2- The Salem Women’s Association and W.M.S. will hold their October meeting at home of Mrs Clarence Willford on Wednesday.

Mrs Amos Robbins, Mrs George Metler, son Donald, and Mrs Kenneth and daughter Rose Marie spent Thursday in St Catharines.

Mr and Mrs Seth Willford of Welland called on Mr and Mrs Clarence Willford on Friday.

Mr and Mrs Asa Chambers attended the fair at Ohsweken on Thursdsay.

SALEM [Welland Tribune January 11, 1945]

Salem, Jan. 11- Salem United church Sunday school will be at two o’clock and church service will be at three. Kelvin Crossley and Ivan Seeman of Fenwick will speak on boys’ parliament work.

Mrs C.E. Strawn spent a couple of days at Niagara Falls with her sister, Miss Ruby Kent. She also called on Mrs Wm. Dart and Mrs H. Fester.

Mr and Mrs George Metler and family were New Year’s guests of Mr and Mrs Amos Robbins and family.

Mr and Mrs Ernest Brown and family and Mr and Mrs Jack Hayward and family were New Year’s guests of Mr and Mrs Ted Hayward and son Leroy.

Mrs C.E. Strawn has had word her nephew, Cpl. Jack Montgomery of U.S. Army in Italy has been wounded.

SALEM [Welland Tribune October 9, 1943]

Salem Oct, 9-Salem United church services were  conducted on Sunday by the pastor, Rev. James Hampson. At the close of the service world-wide communion was observed. Next Sunday harvest home will be celebrated at eight o’clock.

Mrs Edward Hayward spent Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr and Mrs Earnest Brown and family.

Mr and Mrs C.E. Strawn attended the funeral of the late Nelson Brady on Tuesday.

Toronto friends called on Mr and Mrs Harry Farr on Tuesday.

SALEM CHURCH REPORTS GIVEN

[Welland Tribune January 29, 1945]

Salem, Jan. 29-The Salem United church congregational meeting was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Ted Hayward on Jan 23rd with 24 present. Rev. J. Hampson was chairman.

The W.A. report was read by Mrs Elva Farr, showing total receipts of $299.90, with expenses to $125.38, balance of $174.52.

The church treasurer read the church report showing money received $414.41, expenses $33.18; balance $81.23 The Missionary and Maintenance fund report showed a total of $52.65 for the year. The Sunday school report was read by Mr Hampson, showing $144.22 received, $94.80 expenses, balance $49.42.

Salem sent $25.75 to Ontario Temperance Federation. The church roll was read showing 54 members a year ago. Two new members were added this year. There are 43 resident and 13 non-resident members. There were  seven baptisms, three deaths and three weddings.

The report for the boys’ boxes was read by Mrs Edwin Swick showing 14 boxes sent overseas and five in Canada. Donations and weiner roast amounted 437.48; Balance on hand $4.25.

Baby band report was read by Mrs Harold Gent showing 12 charter members, eight members added during the year, six removals during the year, leaving 14 members, with $8.21 sent to Presbyterial treasurer.

The financial statement for the Women’s Missionary Society was  read by Mrs Elva  Farr showing $50 sent to Presbyterial treasurer, an increase of $20 over 1943.

J.V. Henderson was elected elder. John Blanchard and Charles Bailey were elected stewards for two years. The following ushers were appointed: Jake Traver, Harold Bailey, George Cook and Leo Robins. Auditors appointed were Ted Hayward and Jake Traver. Sunday school superintendent will be Ernest Brown with Harold Bailey and Harold Gent as assistants.

Miss Margaret Tuck gave a report on C.G.I.T. group which was organized in September 1944, with 12 members. There are eight members at the present time.

Mrs Ted Hayward was appointed pianist with Miss Margaret Tuck and Mrs John Blanchard as assistants. Mr Hampson closed the meeting with prayer. The ladies served lunch.

SALEM [Welland Telegraph October 10, 1941]

Rally Day Service
Salem, Oct 11-Rally Day was observed at Salem on Sunday morning when Church and Sunday School were combined. William Milligan, the superintendent, led the service, and followed the order of service issued by the Board of Religious Education. The scripture readings were given by Venita Gent, Leo Robins and Elsie Milligan. A story, “A Rainy Sunday,” was given by Ernest Brown. The primary, junior and intermediate classes sang : Jesus Bids Us Shine,”
The pastor, Rev. James Hampson, gave an interesting talk on the theme, “Let us Go into the House of the Lord,” A unique phase of the service was a baptismal service when Irene Elizabeth, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Jake Traver, was baptised.. Next Sunday, Sunday school will meet as usual at 10 o’clock and church service at 7.30p.m.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR LATE MRS J. CHAMBERS

[Welland Tribune December 12, 1943]

Salem Dec 13-A large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral of the late Jeanette Chambers, wife of the late Wilson Chambers, who passed away at the Welland County General hospital on Monday, December 6. Services were held at her late residence, where Rev. James Hampson of Salem United church officiated. Interment was in Hillside cemetery.

During service, Mrs C.W. Bailey and Mrs A. Stirtzinger sang, “Just Beyond,” accompanied by Mrs Edward Hayward. The pallbearers were Amos Holmes, Orland Chambers, Roy Chambers, Harry Farr, Wm. Hipwell and Elra Farr. Surviving are a son, daughter-in-law and grandson; one sister, Mrs L. Chambers, Hamilton, and a brother, Oscar Robins.

W.A. and W.M.S.
Salem United Church W.A. and W.M.S. met at the home of Mrs Harold Gent on Wednesday, with a  good attendance. The president Mrs Harold Bailey, opened the meeting. The scripture lesson read by Mrs T. Neale. Two minutes silence was observed in honor of the late Mrs J, Chambers.

Mrs Elra Farr, missionary convener, took charge of the Christmas program. Carols were sung with Mrs Farr as the leader. Those taking part in the candlelighting service were Mrs C. Bailey, Mrs H. Bailey, Mrs F. Blanchard and Mrs H. Hodgkins. Mrs C. Strawn turned in $19 of the penny drive.

Rev. J. Hampson had charge of election of officers which were as follows: President, Mrs Howard Hodgkins; first vice-president, Mrs H. Gent; second vie-president, Mrs Harold Bailey; secretary, Mrs C. W. Bailey; assistant, Mrs John Blanchard; pianist, Mrs Edward Hayward; flower conveners, Mrs E. Haverson and Mrs Franklin Blanchard; missionary convener, Mrs Elra Farr; Red Cross, Mrs Harold  Bailey and Mrs M. Cook.. The meeting was brought to a close by Rev. J,. Hampson. Lunch was served by the hostess.

FINE YEAR AT SALEM CHURCH

[Welland Tribune January 30, 1947]

Salem, Jan. 30-Gratifying reports were presented at the congregational meeting of Salem United church. Reports of the Sunday school W.A. C.G.I.T. group W.M.S. and Baby Band were read and all showed an increase of activity during the past year The treasurer’s report, read by Harold Gent, showed an increase in givings.

Rev. W.A. Dempsey, the pastor reported 20 families affiliated with the church, with a membership of 51. During the year the pastor officiated at two marriages and three burials.

Charles Bailey and John Blanchard were re-elected as Stewards and present elders were reappointed James Farr, Leroy Hayward and Kenneth Strawn were appointed as additional ushers. Franklin Blanchard, R. Henderson, C. Bailey and Asa Chambers were named church trustees, and Ernest Brown and R. Henderson as parsonage trustees. E. Hayward and G. Metler were appointed auditors.

Votes of thanks were passes to Mrs Ernest Brown for use of their home for the meeting and the pastor and Mrs Dempsey for their leadership during the year.
The ladies served refreshments following the meeting.

SALEM [Welland Tribune December 31, 1943]

Salem, Dec. 31-Salem United church service on Sunday was conducted by the pastor, Rev. James Hampson.

Mr and Mrs William Freeman of Thorold were Christmas guests of the latter’s parents, Mr and Mrs Howard Hodgkins.

Mr and Mrs Oscar Robbins and family of St Catharines, Mr and Mrs George Metler and family, Mrs Mary Metler, Miss Catharine Hipwell, and Mrs Kenneth Lane and daughter Rose Marie spent Christmas with Mr and Mrs Amos Robbins and family.

Miss Margaret Tuck was guest of Miss Ivy Stuart of Dunnville on Christmas day.

Mrs M Dalrymple, Robert Henderson and J.V. Henderson and daughter Mrs Earl Roden of Toronto were Christmas guests of Mr and Mrs Oliver Henderson.

Mr and Mrs Wm. Milligan and daughter Elise spent Christmas day at St Ann’s with Mr and Mrs Frank Minge.

Mr and Mrs Arnold Stirtzinger and family spent Christmas with Mr and Mrs Ed. Hayward and son Leroy.

Christmas guests of Mr and Mrs C.E. Strawn were Mrs V.A. Carr, Canfield, Miss Velma Climenhage, Miss Margaret Strawn, nurses-in-training at Niagara Falls hospital; Miss Edna Strawn, Detroit, Mich.; Irene Strawn and Bill Grimwood, Niagara Falls. Others were Mr and Mrs Kenneth Hansler and son Clifford, Welland.

The Salem Sunday School held their annual Christmas entertainment on Thursday evening. Rev. Mr Hampson acted as chairman. Recitations were given by Mary Stirtzinger, Cyril Metler, George Bailey, Roy Reece, James Farr; also by Lanny Brown, Carol Gent, Lucile Reece, Ralph Reece and Francis Cook. The Beginners and Primary classes gave “Christmas Candles.” An exercise, “The Answer in Person.” was given by Margaret Tuck’s class. Carols were sung by the school. The Merry Maids class and the Cook boys. A comedy, “Checkmate.” was given by four young people. A play entitled “The Old Old Story.” was given in song and pageant. “The Blue Vase” was given by pupils of Miss Margaret Tuck’s school, also a pantomime. “Silent Night” and a dialogue, “Teasing Aunt Chloe.” by a class from Mrs Traver’s school. A dialogue, “The Absent-minded Husband,” by Leroy Hayward and Allan Cook. At the close Santa Claus made his usual call, and delivered presents to the members of the Sunday School.

Miss Edna Strawn returned to Detroit on Monday evening after spending the week with her parents.
Mr and Mrs Leo Belawski and son of Toronto were Christmas guests at the Kivieson and Wasylinki homes.

SALEM [Welland Tribune December 3, 1943]

Salem, Dec. 3-Leading Stoker E.B. McPherson, R.C.N.V.R, Halifax, is spending his leave with his wife and family.

The many friends of Mrs Janet Chambers, who suffered a stroke three weeks ago, will be sorry to hear that she has not improved. She was taken to the Welland county General hospital last Friday.

Mr and Mrs George Metler and family were dinner guests of the latter’s parents, Mr and Mrs Amos Robbins and family.

Miss Catherine Hipwell spent Sunday with Miss Shirley Strawn.

Misses Elsie Stirtzinger, Marie Farr, V. Gent and June and Shirley Strawn were guests of the C.G.I.T girls of Fenwick United church.

Mr and Mrs Ernest Brown and family were guests of Mr and Mrs Ewart Haywood and son Leroy on Sunday.

Mrs Johnson, who has been  visiting her sister, Mrs A Brown, has returned to her home.

SALEM [Welland Telegraph November 27, 1941]

Salem, Nov. 27-Salem United church service was conducted on Sunday, November 23rd by Pastor Rev. James Hampson. Church next Sunday at 11a.m.

Guests of Mr and Mrs C.W. Bailey and Mr and Mrs Harold Bailey and son George on Sunday were Mr and Mrs George Bailey of Thorold and Mr and Mrs Charles Bailey and daughter Clare of St Catharines, also Mr and Mrs Basil Misener and daughter Arlette and Mr and Mrs Carmen Bailey and children Lorna and Earl of Welland.

Mr and Mrs R.L. Vanmattie of Buffalo spent Monday with Mr Vanmattie’s parents, and called on Mr and Mrs C. E. Strawn and family on Monday.

Miss Audrey Neale and Misses June and Shirley Strawn spent Saturday in Welland.

Miss Anna Black of Welland spent the week-end with her cousins Shirley and Suzanne Cosby.

Harold Hodgkins received his graduation diploma on Friday at the annual commencement exercises held at Pelham Continuation school.

Miss Irene Strawn and Bill Grimwood spent Saturday with Miss Strawn’s parents, Mr and Mrs C.E. Strawn.

Miss Ruth Neale, of Niagara Falls spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs T.F. Neale.
Mrs C.E. Strawn called on Mr and Mrs Cecil Chambers and Mrs Florence Chambers at Fenwick on Tuesday.
