Morgan Memorial chapel, Queen’s University, Kingston, was the scene of a lovely double-ring wedding at 10.45 a.m. Friday, December 28, when Rev. J.F. Dungman of Napanee, united in marriage Marjorie Pearl, youngest daughter of Mr. And Mrs J.G. Unger, Napanee, and Philip James Beswick, B.Sc, son of Mr. And Mrs W. Beswick, Port Colborne. Miss Lenore Black of Kingston played the wedding music and during the signing of the register, Mrs. J.F. Dingman sang “I Love You Truly.”
The bride, given in marriage by her brother, Edison B. Ungar, was charming in a street length dress of powder blue needle point crepe, fashioned with a sweetheart neckline and three-quarter length sleeves. A matching headdress of blue ostrich feathers held her shoulderlength veil. She carried a bouquet of Bettertime roses.
Miss Betty Wilson of Ottawa attended the bride. She chose a dress of figured turquoise silk crepe with brown accessories and a corsage of red roses.
Murray MacLean, B.Sc., of Welland was best man.
A wedding breakfast was served with the bride’s mother receiving. Mrs. Unger wore a moss green two-piece needlepoint crepe dress, brown accessories and a corsage of Talisman roses. The bride’s sister Mrs O.Z. Younghusband, Kingston, also received. She chose a yellow figured silk jersey, frock with black accessories and a corsage of yellow roses.
For travelling to the Laurentians the bride donned a casual paddy green wool dress with brown velvet trim, a muskrat coat and brown accessories. Her corsage was Talisman roses.
Out-Of-Town guests attended from Port Colborne, Ottawa and Napanee.
[Welland Tribune March 19, 1945]
Wellandport, March 19- Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at the Lampman funeral home for Mrs. Blanche Caughell, highly respected resident of longstanding in Wellandport who passed away on Tuesday evening at the St Catharines General hospital after a short illness. The late Mrs. Caughell, who was in her 84th year, was a native of Bradstairs, London, Eng. Coming to Wellandport to make her home about 30 years ago. She was a valued member of the United church and active in the W.M.S. Women’s Association and the Wellandport branch of the Women’s institute. She had also been a member of the United church choir for many years until failing eyesight in later years forced her to retire from these activities.
She is survived by two sons, Charlie Cliffen of Mount Dennis, Toronto and Walter Cliffen of Long Branch, Toronto; two grandchildren, Mrs. James Foote of Toronto and Howard Cliffen, R.C.N.V.R., also three great-grandchildren.
Rev. E. Hayes, pastor of the United church officiated at the funeral service and graveside. Among the many beautiful floral tributes were pieces from: Testing range Inspection Board, Long Branch; St. Catharines and Lincoln Advisory Board; Canadian National Institute of the Blind; employes of Massey Harris Welfare Dept. Toronto, and the Shining Hour Club of which deceased was a member.
Casket bearers were Charles Freure, Walter Collver, John Barwell, Fred Barwell, Benjamin Caughell and William Heaslip. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Wellandport.
[Welland Tribune March 20, 1945]
Fenwick, Mar. 20- Friends and neighbors gathered Thursday afternoon in a last tribute of respect to the late Ella Ostrosser, when funeral services were held from her late home on Canboro street to Hillside cemetery for interment. Rev. A.J. Butler of the Disciple church, Welland officiated. Deceased, who was the wife of the late Samuel Ostrosser, passed away at her home March 12th, in her 81st year after only a few days illness. Mrs. Ostrosser had lived in Fenwick for 25 years. She was formerly Ella Moote the second daughter of George and Catherine Moote of Gainsboro township, where she resided previous to her marriage. She was a faithful member of the Disciple church for many years, first of Rosedene Disciple church and on moving to Fenwick of the church here in the village. Surviving her are three sisters and two brothers, Mrs Eretta Hack and Mrs Jennie Stevens of St. Catherines; Miss Tecla Moote of Hamilton; Ithamer Moote of St Catherines and Lucien Moote of Gainsboro.
Pall bearers were Roy Lampman, Isaac Lane and Wm Hipwell all of Gainsboro John Comfort, Archie Beamer and Merle Stirtzinger all of Fenwick.

The death occurred at Welland County General hospital last night. Following an illness of six months of Amy Julia Lockwood, wife of Harry Lockwood, 103 Erie street, Port Colborne, in her 79th year. The late Mrs. Lockwood was born in London and came to Port Colborne from England 45 years ago. She was a member of St James Anglican church.
Deceased was the youngest member of her family. Her husband is the only survivor.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 2pm, from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel, 50 Clarence street, Port Colborne, to Oakwood cemetery, Rev. H.G.L. Baugh will conduct the service.
Funerals – Mrs Harry Lockwood
The funeral of Amy Julia Lockwood, wife of Harry Lockwood, whose death occurred Wednesday evening at Welland County General hospital in her 79th year, was held Saturday afternoon from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel to Oakwood cemetery, Rev. H.G.L. Baugh conducting the service.
The pallbearers were Fred Beck, Victor Beck, John Beck, Jack Beck, Harry Smythe and George Badaway.
Among a number of floral tributes were those of the employes of the town of Port Colborne and the Port Colborne council.

Dain City, Jan. 5-The marriage of Miss Viola Mildred Nugent, only daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. Charles W. Nugent of Dain City, to Harold Victor Binkley, younger son of the late Mr. and Mrs George Binkley, Hamilton, was solemnized in All Saints church at 10 o’clock Friday December 29th, with Rev. Morse C. Robinson, rector, officiating.
The bride, given in marriage by her brother, Sheldon W. Nugent, wore a becoming pale blue frock with black accessories and a corsage of tea roses. She was attended by Mrs. Evan Nugent, who chose a dress of rose crepe with black accessories and a corsage of pink baby chrysanthemums. Evan E. Nugent, brother of the bride, was groomsman.
After the ceremony, a reception was held at the home of Mr. And Mrs Evan Nugent. The bride’s table was centred with the wedding cake, flanked by pink tapers.
Following the reception the bride and groom left for Montreal, the bride travelling in a frock of purple crepe with gold trim and black accessories. On their return Mr. And Mrs Binkley will reside in Toronto.
Among the guests from out of town was Miss Blanche Binkley of Hamilton.

Funeral service for the late George Herbert, caretaker of St James Anglican church and guild hall, who died in Welland County hospital early Saturday morning was held in the chapel of the Dell and Merton funeral home, 50 Clarence street, Port Colborne, yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by friends and relatives.
Rev. H.G.L. Baugh conducted the service.
Among a number of beautiful tributes testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held were those of St James’ Anglican church, St James’ Women’s Auxiliary, Central United Ladies’ Association, the staff of the H.E. Fretz garage and Iota chapter, Delta Kappa Phi sorority.
Interment at Overholt’s cemetery was deferred until a later date because of road conditions resulting from the storm. Paulbearers will be Wilbert Lewis, Fred Dunham, W.W. Crow, K.C., Daniel Berry, Joseph Bates and Robert Blackhall.

The death occurred at her residence Camelot Beach, Wainfleet township on Saturday night, December 30, of Alice Fyetta Busch, wife of John A. Busch, in her 65th year. Death followed an illness of some 18 months.
The late Mrs. Busch was born at Caster and had resided in Wainfleet township for the past 45 years. She was a member of First Lutheran church.
Surviving are her husband John A. Busch, two daughters, Mrs. Grant Bell, Port Colborne and Miss Gladys Busch at home; a grand-daughter; two brothers, George Crick of Fonthill and Norman Crick of Niagara Falls; three sisters, Mrs. Omer Dilts, Fonthill; Mrs. Robert Hall, Welland and Mrs Burton Udell, Niagara Falls. She was predeceased by a daughter Pearl in 1927, by a brother Charles Crick Jr. Of Welland and by a sister, Mrs. John Kells of Niagara Falls.
The funeral will be held from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel 50 Clarence street, Thursday afternoon to First Lutheran church, Humberstone for service at 2.30 o’clock. Rev. Theo A. Iseler conducting the services. Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery.
Funerals Mrs. John A. Busch
The funeral of the late Mrs. John A. Busch whose death occurred at her residence, Camelot Beach, Wainfleet township, on Saturday, Dec. 30, in her 65th year, was held yesterday afternoon from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel, 50 Clarence street, Port Colborne, to Oakwood cemetery. Rev. Theo A. Iseler conducted the service which was largely attended by relatives and friends among whom were those from Toronto, Niagara Falls, Fonthill, Welland and Wainfleet.
During the service, Mrs. Joseph Wetherup sang, “Face to Face.”
The pallbeaers were Mark Vaughan and Kenneth Maclean, Welland; J.C.S. Wilson, Frank Vasbinder and Ira D. Barnhardt, Port Colborne; and William Reichmann, Humberstone.
Among a number of beautiful floral tributes were those of the employes of Bell Marine Supply and Bell Electric and F. Woods and Son.
[Welland Tribune January 26, 1945]
Fonthill, Jan. 26-The death of William Wesley Lee occurred at Hamilton on Sunday, January 21, following a lingering illness. He was in his 78th year.
The late Mr.Lee was born at Lyons near Aylmer, the son of the late Noah and Eliza Lee moving to Bertie township with his parents, when very young. He married Florence Gertrude Singer and resided in Thorold township for many years, later moving to Bismark. About 15 years ago Mr. And Mrs Lee took up residence in the village on Chestnut street.
Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Mrs Dorwin Disher, at home; two grandsons, Pte. Donald Disher of the east coast and Cecil Disher; also one sister, Mrs Euretta Grobb of Edwin, Man. One brother, Edward predeceased him a number of years ago.
The funeral was held from his late residence on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. W.A. Monteith, pastor of the Fonthill United church was in charge of the service. Interment took place in the Fonthill cemetery amid a profusion of flowers.
The pall bearers were Emery Bouk, Harry Farr, Herbert Robins, Archie Overholt, Ernest Moldon and Henry Jenter.
[Welland Tribune January 26, 1945]
Ridgeway, Jan. 26-Omer Hoover 74, well-known local resident for the past 20 years, died in his home Sunday morning, following a four weeks’ illness. Deceased was born in South Cayuga.
Funeral services were conducted in his late home, Highland avenue, Tuesday afternoon by Rev. E.J. Robertson, assisted by Rev. E. Marshall, Toronto, a life-long friend.
The pall bearers were William J. Athoe, Alva Cuttler, Marshal Zavitz, Ward Sherk, E.O. Bowen, T.H. Zavitz. Entombment was in Bertie mausoleum.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Buckmaster, and son John Ernest Hoover, of Moncton, N.B., who was home previous to his father’s death.

The death of Henri Belanger, 49 Cozy street, took place at the Toronto General hospital on Sunday, January 14th, in his 39th year. Ill for some time, Mr. Belanger had been in the hospital for the past three weeks. He was born in St. Gervais, Que., and came to Welland 3 1/2 years ago, during which time he was employed at the Electro Metalurgical Co.
Surviving are his wife, Emilda Lapointe Belanger; a 1 1/2-year old son, Jacques; his mother, four brothers and two sisters in St. Gervais.
The funeral will take place from the J.J. Patterson and Sons funeral residence, 19 Young street, on Thursday, January 18th, at 8.30 a.m. to Sacred Heart church for requiem mass at nine. Interment in Holy Cross cemetery.
Henri Belanger
Funeral services for the late Henri Belanger, 49 Cozy street, who died at the Toronto General hospital on Sunday, January 14th, were held this morning. The funeral took place from the J.J.Patterson and Sons funeral residence 19 Young street, to Sacred Heart church where requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. L.J. Bouchard.
Interment was in Holy Cross cemetery. The pallbearers were Albert Lapointe, Robert Lapointe, Anthony Lapointe, Leo Belanger, Fernando Belanger and Edward Holle.
