Salem, Jan. 29-The Salem United church congregational meeting was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Ted Hayward on Jan 23rd with 24 present. Rev. J. Hampson was chairman.
The W.A. report was read by Mrs Elva Farr, showing total receipts of $299.90, with expenses to $125.38, balance of $174.52.
The church treasurer read the church report showing money received $414.41, expenses $33.18; balance $81.23 The Missionary and Maintenance fund report showed a total of $52.65 for the year. The Sunday school report was read by Mr Hampson, showing $144.22 received, $94.80 expenses, balance $49.42.
Salem sent $25.75 to Ontario Temperance Federation. The church roll was read showing 54 members a year ago. Two new members were added this year. There are 43 resident and 13 non-resident members. There were seven baptisms, three deaths and three weddings.
The report for the boys’ boxes was read by Mrs Edwin Swick showing 14 boxes sent overseas and five in Canada. Donations and weiner roast amounted 437.48; Balance on hand $4.25.
Baby band report was read by Mrs Harold Gent showing 12 charter members, eight members added during the year, six removals during the year, leaving 14 members, with $8.21 sent to Presbyterial treasurer.
The financial statement for the Women’s Missionary Society was read by Mrs Elva Farr showing $50 sent to Presbyterial treasurer, an increase of $20 over 1943.
J.V. Henderson was elected elder. John Blanchard and Charles Bailey were elected stewards for two years. The following ushers were appointed: Jake Traver, Harold Bailey, George Cook and Leo Robins. Auditors appointed were Ted Hayward and Jake Traver. Sunday school superintendent will be Ernest Brown with Harold Bailey and Harold Gent as assistants.
Miss Margaret Tuck gave a report on C.G.I.T. group which was organized in September 1944, with 12 members. There are eight members at the present time.
Mrs Ted Hayward was appointed pianist with Miss Margaret Tuck and Mrs John Blanchard as assistants. Mr Hampson closed the meeting with prayer. The ladies served lunch.

The sideroads in this vicinity have been blocked for over four weeks. S.S. No 5 is still closed, no mail delivery or bread. The farmers are hauling their milk to the main highways with horses and sleighs.

Boyle, March 20-Boyle Red Cross Sewing Circle met at the home of Mrs James Hill on Wednesday with a large attendance. Several members quilted a quilt which will be donated to the Red Cross, while the remainder sewed on children’s sun suits and little girls’ blouses. A pot luck dinner was enjoyed at noon, and the collection was received by Mrs Roy E. Overholt. During the afternoon, a contest conducted by the hostess, Mrs Hill was won by Mrs Wm. J. Anderson. Proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

The sympathy of the Community is extended to Mrs Violet La Rose, Wellandport, who received word that her youngest son. Kenneth, had been killed with the armed forces in Germany. Kenneth spent his childhood days in this vicinity, and attended public school S.S. No.5 Gainsboro township. He is also survived by his older brother. Walter, R.C.A.F and his grandparents, Mr and Mrs John Middleton, Wellandport.

The death occurred at his residence, 547 King street, Humberstone, on Thursday, January 18, of Emanuel Judson Ellsworth in his 89th year. Death followed an illness of two weeks.
The late Mr Ellsworth was well known in the district. A native of Wainfleet township, he had resided in Humberstone for many years conducting an undertaking and furniture business in the village for 45 years prior to his retirement about 18 years ago. Deceased was an adherent of Central United church and a member of Macnab lodge, A.F. and A.M. and Beacon lodge, I.O.O.F.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs R.H. Legge, St Catharines; a brother Fletcher Ellsworh, Wainfleet township; and a sister, Mrs Marion Susan Root, Wainfleet.
The funeral will be held from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel, 50 Clarence street, Port Colborne, on Saturday, January 20, at 2.30 p.m. Interment will be in Morgan’s Point cemetery.

The death occurred at her residence, 265 Clarence street, Port Colborne, this morning of Alice Maude Hughes , daughter of the late David and Mary Hughes and life-long resident of the community. The late Miss Hughes was a member of St James Anglican church.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs Harry Griggs of Holland, N.Y. and a brother, David Hughes of Niagara Falls.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 2p.m. from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel, to Oakwood cemetery, Rev. H. G. L. Baugh will conduct the service.

The death occurred at the family residence, 60 Louis street, this morning of Dorene Georgina Laflamme, three-months-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Lucien Laflamme. Death followed an illness of a few days.
The child was born in Scotstown, Que., and came to Port Colborne with her parents only eight days ago. Surviving are her parents; four brothers, Donald, Edward, Elmer and Roy, and her grandfather, Arthur Dougherty, Cookshire, Que.
The funeral will be held from the residence, 60 Louis street, Monday afternoon, to Mount St Joseph’s cemetery. Rev. B.P. Malone will conduct the service.

A quiet ceremony was performed in the vestry of St John’s Presbyterian church, Toronto, on Saturday, December 30 at seven o’clock, when Dr. Stuart united in marriage, Flora McDowell, daughter of Mr and Mrs T. McDowell, Toronto and James E. Weller, son of Mr and Mrs J.E. Weller, Port Colborne.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride was lovely in a turquoise street-length dress with brown accessories. She wore a corsage of pink tea roses.
Mrs Ken Harris, matron-of-honor wore a pink dress with navy blue accessories. Her corsage was of pink carnations.
Sgt. Ken Harris recently returned from overseas, was the best man.
A reception for 20 guests was held at the bride’s home. Mrs McDowell received the guests in a grey flowered dress with black accessories. And a corsage of red roses. For travelling, the bride changed to a melon pink wool dress with brown accessories.

The death of Miss Catharine Fraser of 248 East Main street, occurred Friday at the Welland County General hospital in her 79th year. She had been in ill health for some time and was taken to the hospital on New Year’s Day. Born in Goderich, the late Miss Fraser had lived all her life in Ontario, and had resided in Welland for the past 25 years. She was a member of St Andrew’s Presbyterian church.
There are no known surviving relatives.
The funeral will be held on Monday, January 8th, at two p.m. from the Sutherland-Thotrpe funeral home, 152 Hellems avenue, to Fonthill cemetery for interment.

Funeral service for the late Miss Catharine Fraser, who died Friday at the Welland County General hospital in her 79th year, were held yesterday afternoon at the Sutherland-Thorpe funeral home, 152 Hellems avenue, with Rev. A.D. Sutherland, of St Andrew’s Presbyterian church officiating. William Massey was the organist, and rendered several favorite hymns.
Interment was in Fonthill cemetery, and the casket bearers were P. McMeekin, A.A. Marshall, W. Crouchley, K. Stone, J. Sager and G. Snook.

The death occurred at her residence, 106 Erie street, Port Colborne, on Sunday of Vera Lodba, wife of George Lodba, in her 62nd year. Death followed an illness of three weeks.
The late Mrs Lodba was born in Austria and came to Port Colborne from Montreal 30 years ago. She was a member of St Patrick’s church.
Surviving are her husband, George; three daughters Mrs Mike Sarafinchan, Thorold and Mrs Fred McLauchlin and Mrs John Dworchuck, Port Colborne; and three sons, Charles in Wainfleet, L. Stoker Harry Lodba R.C.N.V.R., Halifax and John in Austria.
The body is resting at the Dell and Merton funeral home, 50 Clarence street, Port Colborne. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 17 to St Patrick’s church, where mass will be sung by Rev E. J. Canning at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Mount St Joseph’s cemetery.

The funeral of the late Vera Lodba, wife of George Lodba, whose death occurred at her residence, 106 Erie street, Port Colborne on Sunday in her 62nd year, was held from the Dell and Merton funeral home, 50 Clarence street , Port Colborne, yesterday morning to St Patrick’s church where mass was sung by Rev. E.J. Canning. Interment was in Mount St Joseph’s cemetery.
The pallbearers were Harry Hencu, George Gramatovich, Steve Lodba, Eli Phillips, Louis Couguini and Dan Dobrin.
Among the floral tributes were those of the painters, carpenters, coopers and box gang, Inco and the stripping floor, Inco.
Friends and relatives attended from Thorold, Wainfleet and Merritton.
