J.N. MCWATTERS FATHER SUCCUMBS

[Welland Tribune, January 16, 1947]

J.N. McWaters, 65 Sugerloaf street, Port Colborne, received word this morning of the death early this morning at Sarnia General hospital of his father, T.J. McWatters, 116 North Vidal street, Sarnia, building contractor, in his 73rd year. Death followed an illness of several months.

The late Mr. McWatters was born at Watford and had resided in Sarnia for the past 33 years. He was an adherent of the United Church in Sarnia.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Roy Hyatt, Petrolia and Mrs. Norman Harris, Sarnia; two sons, J. N. McWatters, Port Colborne and Arnold McWatters, Ottawa; ten grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. John Laidlaw, London. He was predeceased by his wife, Violet North, in March, 1942 and by a daughter, Iva ten years ago.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon from the Robb funeral home, Sarnia. Interment will be in Lakeview cemetery, Sarnia.

T.J. McWatters Dies At Sarnia
Sarnia, Jan 16-Thomas J. McWatters, 71, local contractor, and a resident of Sarnia more than 6 years, died in hospital today.

Mr. McWatters was the father of W.A. (Arnie) McWatters for many years a football star with the Sarnia Imperials and latterly with the Ottawa Trojans, as playing coach.

Another son is John M. McWatters of Port Colborne, an official of the Sarnia Steamship Lines.

Funeral services will be held Saturday with interment in Lakeview cemetery.

LAST RITES FOR ALVIRA HAINES

[Welland Tribune, January 16, 1947]

Fonthill, Jan. 17-The death occurred on Sunday January 12 of Mrs. Alvira Haines, widow of the late Ruben Haines, at the Millard Fillmore hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. Deceased had been in ill health for the past two years, and was in her 86th year. She had lived in Thorold township until the death of her husband 24 years ago when she moved to Buffalo, N.Y. and has since lived with her youngest daughter Helen.

She is survived by five childen Mrs. Jessie Marsden of Crystal Beach, Mrs. Bert Weirich of Spencerport,N.Y., Miss Helen Haines of Buffalo, George Haines of Williamsville, N.Y. and Horace Haines of Fonthill. Five Grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren also survived. Rev. C.E. Randall officiated at the funeral services held from the Drake and  Barron Funeral Home in Fonthill on Wednesday afternoon. Interment was in Fonthill cemetery.

The bearers were Bert Terreberry, Irvin Barnhart, Arthur McClellan, Clifford Haines, Melvin Haines and Jack Marsden.

DEATHS – MISS S.C. HAIST

[Welland Tribune, January 13, 1947]

The death occurred on Sunday night of Miss Sarah Catherine Haist at the home of her brother Leslie Haist, Pelham Centre, in her 90th year. She had resided in that community all her life. She had been quite ill for four years. A member of Pelham Evangelical Church she had for many years been a member of its Ladies’ Aid. She was a  daughter of the late David and Mary Haist and the family came to Canada from Germany more than 110 years ago. Deceased is survived by two brothers-Leslie and Asa, both in Pelham Centre, and two sisters, Mrs. James Beattie of Hamilton and Mrs. Frank Tufford of Fenwick. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 15, at 3.30 p.m., from the Drake and Barron Funeral Home, Fonthill to Hillside Cemetery, and Rev. J.E. Bender will officiate.

FUNERALS – MRS MARY HORNE

[Welland Tribune, January 10, 1947]

The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Horne, whose death occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Douglas MacIntyre, 63 Cross street, on Tuesday in her 91st year was held yesterday afternoon from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel, Clarence street, Port Colborne, to Fonthill mausoleum. Rev. R.T. Rutherdale conducted the service.

The pallbearers were Donald Horne, Walter Horne, John Horne Jr., Leo LaPlante, Jack Ort and David Ort.

Among the floral tributes was one from the Foremen’s club of Canadian Furnace Ltd.

Friends and relatives attended the service from Toronto, Hamilton and Welland.

MRS JOHN CARPENTER

The funeral of Mrs Alice Maude Carpenter. Widow of the late John Carpenter, who passed away on Saturday evening, January 18, at the Welland County General hospital, was held this morning from the family home, 11 Locust Street, to St. Mary’s Church, where solemn requiem mass was sung by Rev. Father F.A. McKenna, assisted by Father F. Mahoney as deacon, and Father J.F. Culnan as sub-deacon, Father Mahoney officiated also at graveside.

The large number of floral tributes and mass cards noted at the funeral attested to the love and esteem in which deceased had long been held.

The pall-bearers were Thomas Breen. Donald Young, Alderman W.L. Valencourt, John Carpenter, John Bailey and Cecil Ricker.

DEATH – FREDERICK DELL

[Welland Tribune, February 24, 1947]

Niagara Falls, Feb.24-The death occurred this morning in the Niagara Falls General hospital, of Frederick Dell, a native of Crowland township, but a resident of Willoughby township for 45 years. He was engaged in farming, and despite his advanced years, was so engaged almost to the time of his death. He was in his 79th year. Deceased was an adherent of Lyons Creek United church. His wife, the late Mrs. Etta May Burns Dell, predeceased him. Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. H.J. Thomas at home on their Willoughby township homestead; a grand-daughter, Miss Marjorie Thomas; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Wade, Willoughby township; Mrs. William Beam, Stevensville and Mrs. Charles Swayze, Los Angeles; also three brothers, James of Willoughby township, C. Cleve, Buffalo, N.Y., and George, Arizona, U.S.

The remains are resting at the Morse and Son funeral chapel, Niagara Falls, until Tuesday, and the funeral will be held on Thursday, February 27, at 2 p.m., from the family homestead, Willoughby township to Fonthill cemetery.

FUNERALS – MRS. WM. P. HALL

[Welland Tribune, February 19, 1947]

There was a large attendance at funeral services Monday afternoon for Mrs. Helen Hall, wife of Wm. P. Hall, whose death occurred at the Welland County General Hospital on Friday, Feb. 14 in her 63rd year.

The services were held from the Sutherland-Thorpe Funeral Home, 152 Hellems avenue and interment was in Victoria Lawn cemetery. Mrs. Hazel Skinner played the organ at the service. There were many beautiful floral tributes.

Pallbearers were Jack Nelson, Frank Hubbard, James Smith and Paul, Pat and Ted O’Brien.

VERDON HORNE MARRIED TO VERA KITCHEN

Fonthill, Jan. 27-A wedding of local interest took place Saturday at Christ church, Hamilton when Vera Kitchen of Dundas was united in marriage to Verdon Horne of Hamilton. The bride and groom were attended by Mr. and Mrs Thos. Walsh of Hamilton. Following the  ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Horne and Mr. and Mrs. Walsh went to Fonthill where they spent a few days with Mr. And Mrs. William Horne.

VERDON HORNE MARRIED TO VERA KITCHEN

Fonthill, Jan. 27-A wedding of local interest took place Saturday at Christ church, Hamilton when Vera Kitchen of Dundas was united in marriage to Verdon Horne of Hamilton. FUNERALS – SHIRLEY ROSE SMITH

[Welland Tribune, February 28, 1947]

The funeral of Shirley Rose Smith, daughter of Mrs Lulu Smith and the late William Smith, whose death occurred at the family residence Steele street, Humberstone, on Tuesday in her 27th year was held yesterday afternoon from the Dell and Merton funeral chapel, 50 Clarence street , Port Colborne, to Overholt cemetery.

Rev. H.G.L. Baugh, rector of St James; Anglican church, took charge of the service. The pall bearers were Richard Smith, Merton Smith, Albert Smith, Robert Smith, Merritt Shours and Donald Young.

Floral tributes were received from the Humberstone Fire Department, St James; Anglican church Ladies Auxillary and the neighbors.

Friends and relatives attended from Dunnville, Fenwick, Welland, Albion and Buffalo, N.Y.
