WILLIAM DAWDY

[People’s Press, 19 January 1909]

The death occurred at Pelham Centre early Saturday morning of William Dawdy, aged 74 years. He had been a sufferer for several months. Interment was made in Dawdy’s burying ground on Monday. Deceased was never married, but leaves a brother, James, of Fenwick, and another brother Israel, of Pelham Centre, to mourn his demise. He had been a resident of Pelham for 35 or 40 years. Rev. Mr. Hall preached the funeral sermon.

ELIZA ELEANOR METLER McGLASHAN

[People’s Press, 19 January 1909]

On Sunday morning Mrs. John McGlashan died at North Pelham, aged 79 years and eight months. Mrs. McGlashan leaves a husband and a son, Archie McGlashan. Her maiden name was Eliza Eleanor Metler, and she was a very old resident of the township. The funeral will be held today (Tuesday) and interment made at North Pelham.

D.C. GOOLD

[People’s Press, 19 January 1909]

Jordan Jan.16-The death occurred here last night of D.C. Goold, a life-long resident of Jordan Station. Mr. Goold was stopping with a neighbor waiting for the arrival of a mail train, when he dropped back into a chair dead.

His sudden death came as a shock to his many friends. He was in his fiftieth year, and had been at work as usual all day. The cause of his death was heart failure. Deceased was a fruit grower and buyer for Montreal and other markets. A widow and one daughter are left to mourn their loss.

THOMAS WILSON

[People’s Press, 19 January 1909]

On Friday, Thomas Wilson, died at the Industrial Home, aged 78. The cause of death was congestion of the lungs. The deceased was a native of Humberstone and had been an inmate of the Home for about 2 years. Miss Lydia Richmond of Humberstone was admitted to the Home last week. She is 42 years of age.

WILLIAM EARLE BROWN

[Welland Tribune, 22 April 1892]

William Earle, the youngest son of Alex. D. Brown, timber dealer, Merritt street, died on Friday night last of brain fever of only five days. The little one was two years and three months old, and was a bright healthy child until attacked by this dread disease.

FLORENCE FOSTER

[The Welland-Port Colborne Evening Tribune, 8 November 1948]

The funeral of Mrs. Florence Foster, who died at her home, 59 Oakland Avenue, on Thursday morning, (4th) in her 71st year, was held on Saturday afternoon from the H.L. Cudney Funeral Chapel, 241 West Main street to Riverside cemetery, Cayuga. Rev. F.R. Hendershot officiated, and the pall bears were William Harrison, George Caswell, H.A. Snelling, Bert Griffith, William Duncan and F.A. Gausby.

Among the lovely floral tokens were those from the express staff, Noranda, P.Q., Isisho Lodge, also Riverside Chapter, O.E.S.; Commercial XXI; C.N.R. and C.S.L. staffs, Point Edward; staff and pupils, Ridgetown and District High School; High School Staff, Fort Erie; Class of 12A Fort Erie, staff of Welland High and Vocational School.

ALEXANDER RUSSELL HURST

[Welland-Port Colborne Evening Tribune, 4 November 1948]

The death occurred this morning at his home, 10 Garner avenue of Alexander Russell Hurst in his 67th year following an illness of 11 years duration. Born in Lyon’s Creek, he was formerly a C.N.R. engineer in Northwestern Ontario., and in Saskatchewan, and he came to Welland eight years ago. Deceased was a member of Central United church, and had been a member of Ionic Masonic Lodge, Rainy River, for 38 years.

Mr. Hurst is survived by his widow Mrs. Gertrude Miller Hurst, two daughters, Mrs. Muriel Sheils, and Mrs. Maxine Fox; two brothers, Emmanuel and Aden Hurst in Hamilton, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Heidenreich of Hamburg, New York, as well as a grandchild, Beverley Fox, Welland.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. from the H. L. Cudney funeral chapel, 241 West main street to Woodlawn cemetery.

ALEXANDER RUSSELL HURST

Issue of Alexander Hurst (1) and Gomina Rosabelle Buchner

Alexander Russell Hurst (2) was born at Lyons’s Creek on 16 June 1878. He was a C.N.R. Engineer and moved to Rainy River, Ontario ca 1910 where he married Gertrude May Miller, 15 November 1911. They had two children, Muriel Gertrude and Maxine Oline. Around 1917 the family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where they lived at 1408 Lorne Avenue. About 1940, they moved to Welland: address 18 Garner Avenue then 10 Garner Avenue. They were members of Central United Church. Alex had been a member of Ionic Masonic Lodge, Rainy River for 38 years. He died 4 November 1948 after a long illness (Parkinson’s disease). The funeral took place at the H.L. Cudney chapel with Rev. Fred R. Hendershot officiating. Pall bearers were Reeve Ellis Morningstar, Russell Morningstar, James Jackson, Henry Booth, Gordon Smith and Ben Barrick. A memorial service was held under the auspices of Cope-Stone Masonic Lodge with Norman H. Korell in charge, assisted by Wor. Bro. H. Pickering, Wor. Bro. G.S. Jarvis, Very Wor. Bro. H.L. Headington and a representative of Merritt Masonic Lodge, Wor. Bro. G.K. Brown. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Plot 2126, Section H, Range 6, Lot 36.

HANNAH KELLY PRICE

[People’s Press. 17 April 1900]

Hannah Kelly, widow of the late Peter B. Price, died at her late residence in Thorold township, just west of the town of Welland, on Tuesday last, April 10th, at the advanced age of 83 years. Her husband preceded her in death by about ten years. Deceased was the daughter of Isaac and Mathilda Kelly of Beaverdams, of a well-known pioneer family of that section. She was a sister of late John Kelly of Thorold township and also had two sisters, the younger of whom, Miss E.J. Kelly, still survives her, and has given her every attention the past year, during which she has been an invalid. Though often very weak, she had never been confined to her bed, and at last passed away unexpectedly.

Mrs. Price was the second wife of her late husband, and having no children of her own, gave her whole attention to taking care of the three step-children, especially the youngest, Emma C. Price, who was with her in her late illness and to whom she was a most devoted mother. The other children are married, the daughter, Mrs. A.W. Augustine, residing in Arkona, Middlesex county, and the son, A. Price, in Messina, California.

For sixty years Mrs. Price had been a faithful and zealous member of the Methodist church, enjoying the respect and esteem of all who knew her, and the deep affection of a large circle of more intimate friends. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”

MARGARET DALRYMPLE

[Welland Tribune January 10 1945]

Wellandport, Jan 10- Interment service was held at Riverside cemetery, Wellandport, on Thursday afternoon for Miss Margaret Dalrymple, R.U. a former resident of this village for many years.

The late Miss Dalrymple, who was in her 87th year, was born in Gainsboro township, the youngest daughter of the late Andrew and Elspeth  Anderson Dalrymple and had lived practically her whole life in this district. For a few years she lived in Fenwick and recently made her home with her nephew, Andrew Dalrymple at Smithville where she passed away on Sunday, December 31st.

She was predeceased by one sister, Miss Jean Dalrymple of Fenwick, and one brother John Dalrymple of Gainsboro.

The funeral was held at the Book funeral home on Tuesday afternoon burial being postponed until Thursday on account of drifted roads. The casket bearers were Andrew Dalrymple, Angle Dalrymple, Oliver Dalrymple, R. Vance, Marvin Fulsom and George Lounsbury.

MARY LEPPERT SAUER

[Welland Tribune January 6, 1945]

Sauer-At 169 West Main street on Saturday, January 6, 1945, Mary Leppert, widow of the late Edward Sauer in her 76th year. The funeral will be held from the H.L. Cudney Funeral Chapel, 241 West Main street on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Interment Hillside cemetery, Ridgeville.

Mrs Mary Sauer

A native of Fenwick, Mrs Mary Sauer, widow of Edward Sauer, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs C.A Pritchard, 169 West Main street, in her 76th year. She had been ill for approximately two years. Mrs Sauer was a member of the  Evangelical church at Pelham centre, was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Dionis Leppert of Fonthill.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs R. Liebau (Olive) of Ridgeville and Mrs C.A. Pritchard (Bertha) of Welland; three sons, Albert, Ross and Belford Sauer of Welland; two sisters, Mrs John Mawhinney and Mrs William Wilson of Fonthill and two brothers, Dionis and Joseph Leppert. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Sauer, as well as two daughters, Anna and Violet, and one son, Eldon.

The funeral will be held from the H.L. Cudney funeral chapel, 241 West Main street, on Tuesday afternoon, January 9th, at two o’clock to Hillside cemetery, Ridgeville for interment.

Mrs Mary Sauer

Largely attended by friends and relatives from all over the district the funeral of the late Mrs Mary Sauer, who passed away in her 76th year at the home of her daughter, Mrs C.A Pritchard, 169 West Main street on Saturday following a lingering illness, was held from the H.L. Cudney funeral chapel, 241 West Main street to Hillside cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. Rev J E. Bender of the Pelham Centre Evangelical church officiated, and George Saylor sang two of deceased’s favorite sacred songs, “One Sweetly Solemn Thought,” and “Nearer, Still Nearer.” The organist was Miss Alma Sauer.

Among the many lovely floral tokens testifying to the love and esteem in which deceased had long been held were offerings from the Employes’ Association, Joseph Stokes Rubber Company and from the company’s office staff and the Ladies’ Aid of the Pelham Centre Evangelical church.

The pall bearers were Howard Brown, M.P.P. Welland; Howard Bearss, Vernon Leppert, G. Saylor, Ray Lapp and Louis S.
